Glacier Bear in Yukon

8 August 2012

When I saw this bear from a distance, I assumed it was a blonde grizzly. As I drove by on the Alaska Highway I realized it wasn't a grizzly so did a quick U-turn and took pictures while sitting in my car. It likely tolerated me due to the road kill in the ditch.

Alaska Fish and Game confirmed that this is a Glacier Bear. Apparently sightings of Glacier Bears are rare in Yukon. Canadian Geographic magazine (Jan/Feb 2019 edition) refers to my sighting of this rare bear.
