Kluane Lake to Haines Junction, Yukon

24 June 2008 a.m.

What a difference a day makes!  The early morning had some overcast but the sky soon shifted to being bright and blue!  We were surprised to see fresh snow on the mountains along the east shore of Kluane Lake.

The day was shaping up to be a great one so we felt ready to continue southward on the Alaska Highway and enjoy the scenic mountains.  This area is one of our favorite in the Yukon for scenery.  Much can be missed on an overcast day but today was perfect!

First we needed to once again traverse the construction zone north of the Slim's River bridge.

On the south side of Kluane Lake, there are many areas to stop and enjoy the surroundings.   The rest area below would have been a decent overnight spot, although it was visible and open to the highway just a few hundred feet away.

The mud on the truck was from the day before, when we drove a backroad on the east side of the lake.

Soon the highway heads south again, away from Kluane Lake.   The Kluane Lake viewpoint provides a great opportunity for pictures of the mountain ranges and lake.

Heading south towards Haines Junction it is easy to continue enjoying the scenery.

At Haines Junction we debated continuing south along the Alaska Highway or turning right onto the road to Haines, Alaska.
